Summary

Embedding referral details into a high-traffic page led to a 7.11% increase in revenue and engagement

Context

Merchants using ReferralCandy can install widgets to encourage customers to spread the word. The most popular & effective widget is shown post-purchase.

Problem

After checkout, customers couldn’t retrieve their referral link on the store’s website. Instead, they had to visit a separate site and log in again.

These extra steps increased friction and decreased the chances of sharing, resulting in missed opportunities.

Solution

When Shopify released a new Customer Account Extensions feature, we saw an opportunity to help merchants increase referral revenue and address the problem above.

We introduced a one-click widget which let merchants embed referral links directly into their customers account page. Now when customers checked on orders, they were also nudged to refer friends to earn rewards.

✔️ We considered all the use cases

The goal was clear: allow customers to easily access their referral link in their account. However, we also consider what customers would normally expect in a referral account page. By allowing customers to also view past rewards and modify referral details, the widget covered all their needs.

✔️ Setup was easy as one click

Installing the widget took 2 steps and pre-populated by default. This meant users didn’t need to spend more time setting it up. If they wanted to tweak the text further, they could do so easily in the side editor panel.

✔️ Translations provided for global merchants

For non-English merchants, we automatically translated the extension based on their store language. This sped up implementation so that they could focus on other critical tasks.

Impact

The new extension resulted in a 7.11% conversion rate and a direct increase in referral sales.

Can you go back [to the account page]? I was really interested because it looks very good.”

I actually love the feature where you have the ‘Refer A Friend’ tab in the account of the customers.”
